If it's a similar genre tempo wise, just mix. Try to avoid silence unless you are a good hype man on the mic and can keep people interested during transitions.Īgreed, as per my comment to the poster above. I really suggest anyone that uses Serato to READ THE MANUAL! I can't tell you how many times I've been on tour with someone and their serato "messed up" because they just didn't know how to use it properly, updating, you name it! I think every DJ should just come with back up, USB, CDS. I don't really want to risk screwing anything up by complicating things any further than necessary. I am a bit nervous to try to hook up my SL2, especially because it took me about 1 hour to figure out how to set everything up with an SL2/turntables. I would just mix into what the other dude is playing without any pomp or ceremony, or if you want poeple to take notice a bit you could do the classic fade out slowly and then kick in a new track after a couple seconds, usually makes people take notice. or like others have said, usb sticks well organized. If its cdj 2000 nexus you can use them in hid mode to control serato and use your sl2, no need to rca them in, just go from your sl2 box to the empty channels in the mixer and usb to the laptop from the backs of the cdjs. ![]() When I put the USB into the CDJ not being used and load up my track, do I then link to the other CDJ once the other DJ has stopped playing and removed his equipment? What if the unused CDJ is the one with a USB stick in it? Can I take it out and insert my own USB without interrupting the DJ as he plays?įor CDs, will a data type CD loaded with 320 kbps MP3s be sufficient? Or is there a special way to burn them to be used with CDJs?Īs for the artistic stuff, I am pretty certain I am going to be mixing in without any announcement, so I will definitely consult with the DJ going on before me to make sure we're on the same page re: BPM and genre. With regard to loading the MP3s onto the USB, should I put them in folders? Or should I just load them all as is without trying to organize? I will try to confirm the models, but I know that they take USB sticks and I know they can be linked, as my friend played the other day using a single USB stick. Thank you all for the responses! Let me address your comments one by one: If that's the case, kindly ask the previous DJ if you can preview the track before he plays it if it's something unknown to you. At other places you might just mix in from the last track the previous DJ played. At some clubs if there's an MC they might introduce the next DJ and let you just start from scratch. For the more "artistic" side, it's different between clubs. For the technical side, if the club indeed has the 2000s and they are linked you should be able to just put your USB stick in the player not used by the previous DJ and start loading up your tracks. Switching between DJs should be pretty straightforward. If you're using a lot of loops and hot cues you might feel like you're missing out, but otherwise you should be alright. If you just put your files on your USB sticks in an orderly fashion you can do without playlists. As for Recordbox, you can use CDJs without it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.įirst, make sure what model CDJs the club has, so you don't show up with your USB sticks and they only have CDJ1000s. Unfortunately I don't really want to wait at this point, so I will probably be loading up USB keys with songs. What are the steps to take to transition from one DJ to another?Īlso, for some reason Pioneer has stopped giving out license keys for Rekordbox, citing a new version coming. What I am worried about is how to transition from the DJ before me, and then what to do when the next DJ comes on after. I practiced a bit at a DJ shop to get a feel for the CDJs themselves, so I'm not too worried about actually performing. I know for a fact this club uses high end CDJs (probably the 2000 nexuses) and and a high end pioneer mixer. ![]() My problem is that I only have experience with a DDJ-SX and on turntables using my laptop and an SL2 - never with CDJs. It's a nice place, with high end equipment, and I will be performing with about 5 other DJs (one every hour). ![]() I've been DJING for about 8 months now, and finally got asked to DJ at a club (woo!).
